This stamp represents a scallop shell, one of many species of saltwater clams or marine bivalve mollusks. Scallops are found in all the world's oceans, and many species of scallops are known for being able to swim or 'jet' away from predators. They are prized for their tender meat and brightly-colored, elegant shells. In folklore and myth, the scallop shell was associated with Aphrodite/Venus in ancient Mediterranean cultures, and the setting sun over the ocean. It later became a symbol of Christian pilgrimage and charity.
